Synthesis EU-FP6-I3-6th call

SYNTHESYS Project funding is available to provide scientists (Users) based in European Member and Associated States to undertake short visits to utilize the infrastructure (namely the collections, staff expertise and analytical facilities) at one of the 20 partner institutions (see full list below) for the purposes of their research. The 20 partner institutions are organised into 11 national Taxonomic Facilities (TAFs). TAF Users will be hosted by a TAF staff member.

Next Deadline; 30th March 2007

See www.synthesys.info for more information or contact synthesys@nhm.ac.uk

EUR-OCEANS Awards Programme - Call for nominations

The EUR-OCEANS Network of Excellence for Ocean Ecosystems Analysis is seeking nominations of outstanding scientist in Marine Sciences to be considered for the 2007 EUR-OCEANS Awards.
The 2007 EUR-OCEANS awards programme is composed of two different awards: a young scientist award, and a senior scientist. The nominees will be assessed both on the basis of scientific accomplishment (for senior scientists) or the promising nature of their work (for young scientists), and the added value of their work for EUR-OCEANS integration.
The nominees for the young scientist award should be < 35 years old at the time of nomination. Women scientists with children can be a year older at the time of nomination for each child.
We encourage you to nominate both your senior and junior colleagues as a way to celebrate their contribution to science in areas relevant to EUR-OCEANS.

Deadline:March 23, 2007: Last possible date for nominations.

The awards will be presented to selected candidates during the EUR-OCEANS General Assembly Meeting to be held in Glyfada (Greece) on April 25-26, 2007

Pleurogene Project

http://cbr-rbc.nrc-cnrc.gc.ca/spain_halibut/

The Pleurogene Project is a Genome Canada-Genome España collaborative project that focuses on the genomics of two flatfish, Senegal sole (Solea senegalensis) and Atlantic halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus).  These two flatfish yield high value market products and have the potential for production in aquaculture. Currently, the culture of Senegal sole in Spain and other European countries is seriously impaired primarily because of difficulties in controlling reproduction in captivity and suboptimal larval nutrition. Atlantic halibut aquaculture is somewhat more advanced, with commercial aquaculture production occurring in Norway, Iceland, Scotland and Canada, but there are still improvements to make, particularly with regard to judging when to spawn females, selecting genetically superior broodstock and enhancing disease resistance.

MAPO: marine Pollution

Release SME potential to fight against marine pollutions
The MAPO Project is a European Project funded by the European Commission through the 6th Framework Programme for Research and Development. The project gathers a wide range of actors who are committed to sensibilizing and supporting innovative SMEs to take part to European projects/networks in the field of marine pollutions.

EU DAISIE Project

EU DAISIE Project - Alien Species Expertise Registry

Within the actual EU project DAISIE (http://www.europe-aliens.org) a European Alien Species Expertise Registry has now been established.
This registry intends to collect the expertise of experts which may be useful to gather the knowledge onthose species which are actually alien in Europe or may become so.  We want to gather the expertise of experts from all
over the world, since species alien to Europe come from all over the
world.

The expertise registry contains details for individual experts with
respect to taxonomic expertise, geographic units, and thematic areas
(e.g. distribution, conservation, restoration, ecology, economical
impact, genetics, legislation, administration, management, control,
biocontrol, pathways, transportation, physiology, risk assessment,
taxonomy, systematics).

international Ecological Genome Consortium

An international Ecological Genome Consortium (http://www.ornl.gov/sci/egc/index.htm) has been formed to promote DNA sequencing in organisms of interest to the ecological and environmental sciences.

The near-term goals of the consortium are to provide a forum that will

The consortium web site provides an on-line mechanism whereby scientists from the national and international community can join the consortium, identify areas of research interest, specify types of sequencing required, and suggest organisms and/or collections of organisms for future sequencing.  Membership in the consortium is open to researchers from all scientific disciplines.  Information obtained through the consortium will be made available through an on-line newsletter.

METAFUNCTIONS

The METAFUNCTIONS project -The METAFUNCTIONS project is pooling expertise in bioinformatics, computer
science, geographical information systems and marine sciences. It will
develop a data-mining system that correlates genetic patterns in genomes
and metagenomes with contextual environmental data. This innovative tool
may enable scientists to infer functions and activities for sequenced
hypothetical genes
, thus providing a wealth of information about niche
adaptations as well as new enzymes and proteins for medical and industrial
use.

Marine Genomics Project - Charleston US

The Marine Genomics Projects - The Marine Genomics project is a functional genomics initiative developed to provide a pipeline for the curation of Expressed Sequence Tags (ESTs) and gene expression microarray data for marine organisms. It provides a unique clearing-house for marine specific EST and microarray data and is currently available at http://www.marinegenomics.org.

ESTs and microarray data are available at http://www.marinegenomics.org and from the paper http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2164/6/34 (Marine Genomics: A clearing-house for genomic and transcriptomic data of marine organisms, David J McKillen, et al, 2005). The paper talks about 19 different marine species databases and NON-EDITABLE EST SEQUENCE SPECIES...

AQUAFIRST

Aquafirst - Aquafirst European Project http://aquafirst.vitamib.com/
The overall aim of this project, supported by the European Comission, is to identify genes associated with stress and disease resitance in oyster, trout, sea bream, and sea bass in order to provide a physiological and genetic basis for marker-assisted selection.

MarinERA

MarinERA - MarinERA is a project funded by the EU FP6 ERA-Net Scheme (2004-2008). It is a partnership of the leading Marine RTD Funding Organisations in 13 European Member States.
In addition, a range of Advisory members are associated with the project. MarinERA aims to the coordination of national and regional RTD activities.

MARBEF

Marbef -  Marine Biodiversity and Ecosystem Functioning Network of excellence - EU-FP6: http://www.marbef.org/
With marine species disappearing at an alarming rate and increasing evidence that our sensitive marine ecosystems are under threat, one EU-funded research network of European marine institutes, MarBEF, is engaged in a struggle to assemble all relevant knowledge and get it out to the relevant stakeholders. That means not just to scientists, but also to decision-makers, industry and the public at large.

Nearly 1,000 new pictures of species caught in the Atlantic in MarBEF species gallery and ERMS
IMARES and the ICES-IBTS working group contributed their large image library (ZEUS 1.2) to MarBEF. All these pictures are now stored in our online species gallery and each of them are linked to a species in our species register ERMS. We are greatfull to all the data collectors of IMARES and the ICES-IBTS working group for this substantial and generous offer.
