Marie Curie Fellowship hosting opportunity in meiofaunal metagenetics, MEFGL, Bangor, UK

This Autumn, the Molecular Ecology and Fisheries Genetics Laboratory (MEFGL -  http://biology.bangor.ac.uk/research/mefgl/),  School of Biological Sciences, Bangor University, UK  will access Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funding streams that will consolidate research activities in using 454 ultrasequencing technologies for the analysis and quantification of benthic meiofaunal biodiversity (http://biology.bangor.ac.uk/%7Ebssa0d/scresearch.htm). The latter will investigate the relationship between meiofaunal metagenetic community diversity with salinity regimes, biotic and abiotic factors in estuarine ecosystems (http://biology.bangor.ac.uk/~bssa0d/scresearch.htm) and would provide an ideal opportunity for linkages with a Marie Curie Action program (http://ec.europa.eu/research/fp7/understanding/marie-curieinbrief/research-development_en.html) along a related theme. The research platform will enable hypotheses to be addressed regarding species, functional and phylogenetic diversity in relation to,for example, multi-level biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, environmental change and latitudinal clines.

The Molecular Ecology and Fisheries Genetics Laboratory (MEFGL) is a leading research division within the School of Biological Sciences' (SBS) Molecular Ecology and Evolution Group, one of the largest research areas within the University. A central part of our work is the application of molecular markers such as microsatellites, AFLPs, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and sequence data (454 and Sanger) to fundamental evolutionary and ecological questions relating to the origins, levels, distribution and ecological significance of genetic variation in wild populations. The MEFGL, together with other members of the Molecular Ecology & Evolution Group, has recently moved into the purpose-built research suite embedded within the newly built £8 million Environment Centre for Wales (ECW http://www.ecw.ac.uk/aboutus.html). The new facility provides open-plan office space for up to 28 postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers, alongside dedicated PCR, sequencing, bioinformatic, and main laboratory facilities.

BiodivERsA

The BiodivERsA "Pan-European call for international research projects on biodiversity: linking scientific advancement to policy and practice” has been published on the project website.

Altogether 12 countries have confirmed their participation in this transnational programme. The total provisional amount of the call is 17,56 million euros. Scientific teams from the 12 participating countries are invited to submit outline proposals by 3d March 2008.

The projects should address one or more of the following themes:

a) Global change and biodiversity dynamics
b) Ecosystem functioning
c) Ecosystem services
The call is open to research on all ecosystems and organisms. The challenges are considered to be of equal importance across all types of ecosystems: aquatic, marine and terrestrial.
In the call, emphasis is laid on the link between excellent science and relevance to policy and practice. It is hoped that the projects to be funded under this joint research programme will provide an opportunity for science to help plan policy responses to challenges in the relationship between biodiversity functions and human activities. It is also expected that the European scope of the projects will provide strong added-value to the research carried out and consitute a significant contribution to the 2010 target.

Biofuel targets not possible without biotech, says EuropaBio

EuropaBio, the EU association for bioindustries, which represents 25 national biotechnology associations and some 1800 small and medium sized biotech companies in Europe, has published a position paper on the EU's energy and climate change proposal saying that the biofuel targets contained in the package are indeed attainable, though not without the help of its members. EuropaBio's Biofuels Task Force states that biotechnology will be needed to wring a higher yield out of each year's harvest in order to reach the 10% biofuel target by 2020.

EURYIKA! The solution to Europe's research needs

If outstanding young researchers are flies, then the European Investigator Award (EURYI) is the honey pot. Created in 2003 by the European Heads of Research Councils (EUROHORCs), in association with the European Science Foundation, these deliciously tempting grants are designed to attract the best possible future scientists - and encourage them to stick around. Funding is used to support upcoming researchers, who take up their proposed research programme at a host institution in a participating county. Every year witnesses the presentation of 25 awards, and 2006 saw an expansion in the number of EURYI hosts, as the Foundation for Polish Sciences (FNP) in Warsaw joined in.

Tomorrow's answers start today with the Seventh Research Framework Programme

The European Union puts considerable emphasis on the need to invest more in research. By increasing our knowledge base, Europe will be more able to address its challenges for the future such as climate change, energy security or the ageing population. Increased emphasis on industrial research and innovation will lead to new products and services that will boost Europe's international competitiveness. The EU has responded to the increased need for coordinated and focussed research with the Seventh Research Framework Programme, due to be voted by the European Parliament on 30 November, for final adoption by the Council of Ministers on 5 December. The European Commission is making available information to help guide the press through this comprehensive programme, the biggest yet at European level.

Genome Analysis Tool Geared Toward Ease of Use

DOE JGI Releases Latest Version of IMG
Genome Analysis Tool Geared Toward Ease of Use

An enhanced version of the Integrated Microbial Genomes (IMG) data management system has been released by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Joint Genome Institute (JGI). IMG 1.1, contains 32 new public genomes and 14 new genomes sequenced by DOE JGI, bringing the total of genomes in IMG to 337. These include 301 bacterial, 25 archaeal, and 11 eukaryotic genomes, of which 36 finished and 75 draft genomes were sequenced by DOE JGI.

The new IMG 1.1 features enhanced capabilities to improve the efficiency of the genome analysis process. To extend the utility of the organism and gene analysis tools, several new features have been added. These include a function to compare gene occurrence profiles across organisms, an enhanced support infrastructure for comparative organism statistics, and the ability to save and load organism and gene analysis settings from local user files. The documentation has been also expanded to ease the overall comprehensibility of IMG analysis.
IMG, accessible to the public at http://img.jgi.doe.gov/, is the result of a collaboration between the DOE JGI and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory Biological Data Management and Technology Center (BDMTC).

The new version of IMG will be demonstrated on June 26, 2005 at the International Conference on Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology in Detroit, Michigan (http://www.iscb.org/ismb2005/demos.html).

IMG continues to be updated on a quarterly basis with new public and DOE JGI genomes. The next update is scheduled for September 1st, 2005.

The DOE Joint Genome Institute, supported primarily by the Department of Energy Office of Biological and Environmental Research in the DOE Office of Science, is among the world leaders in whole-genome sequencing projects devoted to microbes and microbial communities, model system vertebrates, aquatic organisms, and plants. Established in 1997, JGI now unites the expertise of four national laboratories, Lawrence Berkeley, Lawrence Livermore, Los Alamos, and Oak Ridge, along with the Stanford Human Genome Center to advance the frontiers of genome sequencing and related biology. Additional information about JGI can be found at http://www.jgi.doe.gov/
