22.07.2008 - Postdoctoral researcher position in charophyte systematics at Centro de Ciencias do Mar, University of the Algarve, Portugal
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral researcher position* in charophyte systematics at Centro de Ciencias do Mar (CCMAR - http://www.ccmar.ualg.pt/), at the University of the Algarve (http://www.ualg.pt).
Background
The endosymbiosis of an oxgenic photobacterium by a eukaryotic host cell leading to the evolution of the chloroplast, and the subsequent colonisation of land by plants, were pivotal events in cell and Earth history. The transition to land marked an unparalleled period of morphological and developmental innovation in plant form resulting in the formation of plant-dominated terrestrial ecosystems with global environmental effects. Relationships among charophyte algae and land plants, on either side of the boundary marking the transition to land, remain controversial and make it difficult to polarise what are thought to be the key developmental innovations underpinning colonisation of land.
The postdoctoral researcher will explore the morphological diversity, life-history and developmental characteristics, and phylogenetic relationships among the charophyte algae in relation to the evolutionary transition of plants to a terrestrial environment. It is essential that the candidate have a Ph.D. and a strong background in green algal systematics and molecular phylogenetic methodology. Unix/Linux computing skills, and the ability to programme in a scripting language, would be highly advantageous.
The position is available for 3 years from January 2009 and is open to all nationalities. The researcher will receive a salary of 1495 euros/month.
Applications should be submitted before 15th August 2008 to Cymon J. Cox (cymon@ualg.pt). Applicants should send a covering letter detailing their research interests, a current C.V., and the email addresses for 3 professional referees. Informal enquires are welcome to the same address.

CCMAR is located on the Gambelas campus, 4km from Faro, the captial city of the Algarve and close to Faro International Airport (FAO). (http://www.ualg.pt/index.php?option=com_google_maps&Itemid=2311&lang=en)

08.07.2008 -  Marie Curie Fellowship hosting opportunity in meiofaunal metagenetics, MEFGL, Bangor, UK
This Autumn, the Molecular Ecology and Fisheries Genetics Laboratory (MEFGL -  http://biology.bangor.ac.uk/research/mefgl/),  School of Biological Sciences, Bangor University, UK  will access Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) funding streams that will consolidate research activities in using 454 ultrasequencing technologies for the analysis and quantification of benthic meiofaunal biodiversity (http://biology.bangor.ac.uk/%7Ebssa0d/scresearch.htm). The latter will investigate the relationship between meiofaunal metagenetic community diversity with salinity regimes, biotic and abiotic factors in estuarine ecosystems (http://biology.bangor.ac.uk/~bssa0d/scresearch.htm) and would provide an ideal opportunity for linkages with a Marie Curie Action program (http://ec.europa.eu/research/fp7/understanding/marie-curieinbrief/research-development_en.html) along a related theme. The research platform will enable hypotheses to be addressed regarding species, functional and phylogenetic diversity in relation to,for example, multi-level biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, environmental change and latitudinal clines.

The Molecular Ecology and Fisheries Genetics Laboratory (MEFGL) is a leading research division within the School of Biological Sciences' (SBS) Molecular Ecology and Evolution Group, one of the largest research areas within the University. A central part of our work is the application of molecular markers such as microsatellites, AFLPs, single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and sequence data (454 and Sanger) to fundamental evolutionary and ecological questions relating to the origins, levels, distribution and ecological significance of genetic variation in wild populations. The MEFGL, together with other members of the Molecular Ecology & Evolution Group, has recently moved into the purpose-built research suite embedded within the newly built £8 million Environment Centre for Wales (ECW http://www.ecw.ac.uk/aboutus.html). The new facility provides open-plan office space for up to 28 postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers, alongside dedicated PCR, sequencing, bioinformatic, and main laboratory facilities.

08.07.2008 - Postdoctoral Positions Available, Purdue University,  West Lafayette, USA
Multiple postdoc positions are available for work on a collaborative project involving cyanobacterial hydrogen production. This project is focused on developing Cyanothece, a unicellular cyanobacterium, as a new model microbe to study biological hydrogen production. Cyanothece spp. are capable both of photosynthetic O2 production and nitrogen fixation (a process that is exquisitely sensitive to oxygen).  To accommodate such incompatible processes in a single cell, Cyanothece produces oxygen and stores carbon in the form of glycogen during the day, and subsequently creates an O2-limited intracellular environment to perform oxygen-sensitive processes, such as N2-fixation, at night.  Thus, Cyanothece cells are natural bioreactors for the storage of captured solar energy with subsequent utilization at a different time during a diurnal cycle.

28.01.2008 - Postdoctoral position,(Iron sensing and regulation) role of glutathione-ligated Fe-S center,  Integrative Biology Laboratory, CEA, near Paris

A postdoctoral position is opened in the Integrative Biology Laboratory (CEA) near Paris for 24 months (about  2000 euros net monthly income, depending on experience) to study the role of the iron-sulfur center containing glutaredoxin on iron sensing and regulation. The candidate should have a good background and practice in biochemistry and/or molecular biology attested by publications. He/She should send me (franck.chauvat@cea.fr) an extended Curriculum Vitae including the list of publications and the names and e-addresses of two references.

The Integrative Biology Laboratory is located in the huge multidisciplinary CEA campus (about 8,000 people), close by the Paris XI University (Orsay) and CNRS campus of Gif sur Yvette.

Postdoctoral project: Role of glutaredoxins in the signaling, regulation and interplay between redox and iron homeostases

The cytotoxic byproducts of photosynthesis and respiration, collectively known as reactive oxygen species, are dealt with by cellular antioxidant defense systems that, among other processes, maintain the redox homeostasis of cellular thiols. This function is accomplished in part by the glutaredoxin (Grx) enzymes, which use reduced glutathione (GSH) to catalyze the reduction of disulfides (protein-S-S) or glutathione mixed disulfides (protein-S-SG) by a dithiol (CxxC-requiring; C and S stand for cysteine and serine, respectively) or a monothiol (CxxS-dependent) mechanism. Little is known concerning the specificity and redundancy of the Grx enzymes in photosynthetic organisms that are crucial to the Biosphere, in using solar energy and mineral nutrients to make up molecular oxygen and organic assimilates critical to the food chain. Therefore, we have undertaken the analysis of the evolutionary conserved Grx enzymes in the model cyanobacterium Synechocystis that possesses a small sequenced genome (3.57 Mb, easily manipulable with our replicating plasmids) encoding three Grxs: two dithiol (Grx1 and Grx2) and one monothiol (Grx3).

In collaboration with bio-informaticians, we have predicted many Grx-target protein interactions and validated a few of them involving either Grx1 and Grx2 (manuscript submitted for publication) or Grx3. To better understand the crosstalks between signaling of and tolerance to both iron and oxidative stresses, the postdoctoral fellow will investigate the physical interactions between the Grxs proteins and both the Fe-containing transcriptional regulators FUR (ferric uptake regulator) and PerR (peroxide regulator, Houot et al. BMC Genomics; http://www.biomedcentral.com/1471-2164/8/350). Among others important evolutionary-conserved processes we will study the role of the GSH-ligated [2Fe-2S] center of Grx3 (Picciocchi et al. Biochemistry; http://pubs.acs.org/cgi-bin/abstract.cgi/bichaw/asap/abs/bi7013272.html) on the sensing of Fe and oxidative stresses, using appropriate techniques: two-hybrids; GST pull-down, Western blot; site-directed mutagenesis of Grx3 and PerR/FUR (in collaboration with modeling experts); Gel shift; transcriptional fusion to a reporter gene and DNA microarrays; and biophysical characterization of relevant Fe/Fe-S-containing wild-type and mutant proteins (in collaboration with experts in EPR spectroscopy).
